Good old Thomas Paine for today these are the times that try men’s souls. He was right then and he would be right if he was alive today. When we have a dysfunctional President and congress amidst a global health crisis that has sent economies falling like domino’s proves once again these really are the times that tries men’s souls.
One can not help wonder that with all the events that are occurring today that just maybe we would like to think better days lie ahead. Then again when ever we think about that something worse always happens. Man has always adapted to changes that have a way of altering ones life. Many of us are creatures of habit. And, when events or occurrences happen to disrupt our habits we seem to adjust to the different patterns that reshape our lives. It is no more evident than today.
The anxiety of losing ones job, the financial strain now put on families, and the fear of contracting this deadly virus have all reshaped our lives in so many ways. As the history of man moves forward too many of us feel we have gone backward. And, in so many ways we actually have. We are now being continually riddled with all forms of disruptions in our daily lives. And, when you look to what our own government responses have been just shows the lack of discipline in putting together a concise plan of action to mitigate the collateral damage that is still being unleashed by this pandemic.
When the Great Depression hit FDR put a concise plan of action into play that benefited so many Americans even to this day. Now, when we look to what happened when the great recession hit in 2008 our leaders put in play a concise plan of action that very few Americans benefited. In a little span of 76 years our leaders went from being benefactors to a suffering public to become beneficiaries of a suffering public. An abrupt turn around that is still happening.
The public has always been for the past 50 years not the beneficiaries of a compassionate and benevolent government. We have since been victimized by the authoritarian rule of a self serving bureaucracy. The likes of which will only continue. Come this November when the public has an opportunity to right the injustices that are keeping so many Americans facing more disruptions in their daily lives only to be denied the opportunity to do so by a corrupt political process is the undeniable fact we are faced with today.
When one party is calling for unity only to find that it has only divided itself remains the harsh reality. And when so many out of fear out of this global health crisis, or have become so accustomed to the disruptions in their lives thinking that whatever they do won’t change things the way they are is a very sad commentary. And, today we really can attest to the fact that “These are the times that try men’s souls.”
