Buried in Treasures – Help for People With Hoarding Issues

Hoarding is a misunderstood and very isolating problem. You can’t tell that a person has issues with hoarding by just looking at them.

Hoarding is not delegated to people that are poor or uneducated. Hoarding knows no bounds. It affects more people than most people realize.

Hoarding is now classified under the DSM-5 as a mental health issue. But there is hope.

The “Buried in Treasures” work group is modeled after the work of Drs. Tolin, Frost and Steketee, the leading experts on hoarding in the country. It’s aim is to bring together people with hoarding issues so that they can start on the process of understanding their issues and learning new ways to deal with them. It allows the people in the group the opportunity to connect with other people that have the same issues (on various levels). It is a support group as well as a learning environment.

The “Buried in Treasures” Workshop is about more than clutter. It is about overcoming challenges, increasing motivation, reducing acquiring, prioritizing and celebrating choices.

For most of the people in the group, clutter is getting in the way of how they want to live their life. They are overwhelmed with too many possessions. They are embarrassed to have people over – therefore, they are isolated.

The group was created by and for people who are ready to live a less – cluttered life!

The “Buried in Treasures” group is for people who would like to learn tips on how to de-clutter and stop over-acquiring with people who know what it’s like. Each week there are discussions around a specific skill, followed by the completion of challenging and rewarding exercises. Individual progress, challenges, successes, and goals are also monitored throughout the sixteen weeks.

The group offers a judgment-free environment for people ready to make a change in their life.

For people that have gone through the program it is life-changing. To outsiders they may not see a huge difference in the persons home – but the persons life will have changed. The way they see themselves and how they feel will have changed. They feel empowered to continue in their quest for a better life. Something they did not have before.

Change takes time. If it took 10 or 20 years to get to the point where their home was almost unlivable, it will take a long time to make the change to a more uncluttered and safer life.

One small step at a time.
